Notes to self from holiday 2010

Travelling with children is still restrictive, but it is great to see them able to walk farther and farther on their own.

Shocking to note that Virgin Megastore outlets are all closed in the USA - an apparent sign that US retail economy is still not recovered that there were significant empty retail space at Union Square in SFO.  Dang, I was so hoping to find bargain DVDs.  Can't explore and travel on my own when I'm with the kids.

TBC ...

  3. Managed to spend a little time in BORDERS though ... the comics section was close to the children section, I snuck a few peeks at the new Green Hornet comics.

  4. In the US, there was no equivalent of Wireless@SG free internet service provided by the government ...

Though major malls and many cafes did provide free internet WIFI.

Classy hotels also don't provide free internet, but several local chains like Best Western & Joie De Vivre do. Their WIFI weren't very good, but they offered PC terminals with free printing.

I took a chance 48 hrs before the departure flight that I'll find some WIFI somewhere to do internet check-in.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to do internet check-in through my SE Satio, both the web version and the mobile version.

I had to sheepishly used my wife's Nokia to do the check-in.

  5. Actually forgot about the liquid ruling at the airport ... just gave up a bottle of EVIAN and a few BATH&BODYWORKS items 'cos the rest of the stuff were already checked-in.

Sucks that there was no free internet at the airport.

  6. A tip for you on your next trip to the US. Shop online in Singapore first, then get the stuff delivered to your hotel in the the US. Many online stores provide free shipping above a certain amount and they usually offer the best prices anyways.

  7. Thanks for the tip.

Being me though, I'd be shopping mainly for books no longer carried by the main stores. When I went for hols before the kids came, we did 2nd-hand-bookshop crawling all over the cities like San Francisco, Melbourne, London and Ediburgh.

Fortunate that Snowylady likes to shop for books too.

But your method would probably work for Amazon - they sometimes do carry 2nd hand titles I want.

One interesting find I got from Disneyland store was Star Wars action figures - using Disney characters.

    Will post some pix.
