Challenges of having a precocious reader of a child

Snowylass reads the newspaper left around the house and asks a lot of questions, especially about the crime sections ...

  1. Might not be easy to answer. But these are not crimes made in SG, right ?

  2. Unfortunately, SG is not immune to these crimes ...

  3. But... but... I thought SG was 100% safe !

I was a precocious reader too, but I was only interested in what was written on the chocolate powder box according to what my mum said :))

  4. Streets of Singapore are probably as safe as the safer parts of France, but not 100%.

And unfortunately, many of the crimes in Singapore did not occur between strangers on the streets.

  5. Perhaps not too much a challenge unless you have difficulty talking about certain subjects. The sooner kids know about the real-world the better, and break the fairy-tale image some of them bring to adulthood. Rule of thumb: Do what Atticus Finch would do.

  6. I remember Atticus :)
I agree to give the truth to kids but not in a too cruel way. I would make them understand that there are bad people and good people but not explain in details how cruel people can be... You got also to preserve their childhood as much as possible and not break their imagination and innocence as well as to prepare them to this "not so magic" world.

  7. I agree Liu.

It's not about fairy-tale image of the world - it's about being positive and having things worth aspiring for.

I don't agree it's about letting kids know the 'real world'. The 'real world' is not static, and they have a role to shape it - what they need is guidance on what influence they will play.

  8. By fairy-tale perhaps I should clarify I mostly meant this idea girls have growing up that they are Princesses. Then still expect to be treated like one as an adult.
