To save or not to save ...

My poor desktop clunked out again.

Refusing to start most of the time, like one of its capacitors is gone.

The old lady had been around for 5 years or so, so I'm not really surprised ... they don't build parts like they used to.

Still, I can't quite decide whether to replace the motherboard or get a new computer.

Any advice from friends out there?

I use it mainly to surf and watch videos, and I don't play any latest games.

Just thinking though that I don't want to end up with the "Ship of Theseus" ...

  1. Probably cheaper total cost of ownership to buy a new computer..a laptop. If your monitor is still working you can connect it up to get the old view you used to.

An entry level laptop now can be had for sub $1000.

Depending on your needs a netbook at about $600 might just be what you need. I actually use one and it is good enough for development work as long as you have enough RAM.

  2. Simple. Compare the cost of motherboard and a brand new set of system. '-p

At first I thought a netbook is cute as I love all things mini and compact and portable.. but whoa the letters and numbers become so small since the screen size is about 7" only, I had difficulty reading from the screen and took longer than my usual time to complete some spreadsheets (I bring work home sometimes)..

Then the speed of netbook.. so it is back to 15" for me. I luv Asus, but I downgraded my Vista to XP..Vista slows down many of my applications.

  3. Actually u can also get lots of expert advice from Sim Lim.. some staff from some good shops there will care to compare the prices for you and give u really sound advice without obligations. I dont find such services in Funan, perhaps except for Challenger.

And remember to shop for the best price.. I dont buy unless I have at least 3 quotes from 3 different shops for the same product...
