Twilight

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Romance
Finally got to watch a movie with Snowylady.

Well, she got to choose the show, and during the trailers, she told me she wants to watch "Ip Man" next.

Twilight the movie, as compared to the novel, is very much more a teenage romance story more than a gothic horror tale, though the term teenage romance is rather one-sided - Edward Cullen is supposed to have been 17-years old ... "for quite a while" ...

For whatever reasons though, the audience were laughing a lot throughout the movie like it's a pure comedy instead.

Most of the show was dominated by close-up shots of expressions from the characters, mainly Bella and Edward.

Rob Pattinson (Edward Cullen) was gorgeously made up as an icy-cold teen with killer looks, and did a marvellous job using his body and face to express his delimna between wanting Bella (look at her as if she's something to be eaten) and fleeing from her.

Kristen Stewart though, did not do so good a job to convey what was it that was driving her character Bella to Edward. I mean, okay, the boy is a great looker and drives a really cool and expensive car, but Bella is supposed not to be a bimbo.

And while Edward revealed that as a vampire, his looks, his voice and his scent are supposed to drive preys into his arms, the movie failed to convincingly show what was it that made Bella feel whatever she was feeling to Edward, and it was not shown whether Bella made up her mind herself or she was under undue & involuntary influence.

Snowylady said Pattinson could have made a great elf in LOTR movie too, but agreed he was physically too rugged.

In all, a great way to spend an afternoon with Snowylady, without the kids!!!

  1. The girls in the office have been squealing about this. Frankly, I'm much happier catching Ip Man with my cousins the Monday after it opens, and Red Cliff pt 2 in January '09.

I've yet to read the novel, so I don't think I can rightly comment on the movie. Glad to hear you and Snowylady got to "pak tor" for an afternoon. ;-)

  2. Haven't read the novel either - anything with gothic horror is basically not my cup of tea.

I read up summaries of the entire published series on wiki, and it's cool. Vampire books are plentiful, so I wondered what made this one successfully attractive to movie-makers.

  3. I guess this is one of the rare ones that gave the girls better eye-candy than the guys ...

  4. Kristen Stewart is a doll, but going by what you say, I think this perhaps isn't quite her role.

  5. This was a terrible show, I couldn't wait for it to end.

As for why it is popular it is quite simple, romance (as in mills and boons) plus horror, what's not for teenage bimbos to like? (Oh, the tragedy; the love of my life is a vampire! And he looks like a greek god too!)

The plot is so bad it makes the Wuthering Heights look good. The dialog is just as good as Wuthering Heights.

The only saving grace for me was the location. Brooding and grim forests, I could walk there. (Perhaps the same reason I like rainy English country-side)

As for Snowy's comment about being too rugged to be an elve. Well, better a somewhat rugged elve than a fat one I say. (let's not name names)

I am usually quite happy to sit through any kind of movie and try to enjoy even if a little. This was one where I wanted to leave but couldn't for social reasons.

  6. Sometimes, I do not laugh at the same time as the other people. It is rather annoying because their laughs pull me out of the movie and then it is difficult to me to get back to the story because for several minutes, I try to understand what make them laugh and what did I miss. :-)

  7. Ur, it's a chick flick ... expectations have to be adjusted accordingly ... I just tell myself I'm a 17-year old again watching it with a girl I just managed to date after somehow gathering enough courage to ask her out on a one-on-one ... helps a lot to have Snowylady at my side ...

  8. I know, it is why I didn't walk out of the cinema or dose off. I did not say anything bad about the movie to my date. (Meaning I did not say very much about the movie except to say I liked the location)

Oh wait, there were enjoyable moments in the cinema. Seeing local comedians put up sketches imploring viewers to turn off your mobile phones was amusing. This happened right before the movie.

Last rant (I promise!) The movie wasn't even scary. If I was 17 again that would be the perfect excuse to put my arm protectively around my date who would be leaning against me, peeking out of the gaps between her fingers covering her face.

Last point: It depends on your definition but I wouldn't term Twilight a gothic horror. Compare this to one of the classics of gothic horror like The House of Usher by Poe and perhaps you can see why I disagree. The level of horror in this movie was just non-existent, for me at least.

  10. I believe the sequel to be directed by a different director will return closer to the horror theme.

  11. Yeah, and it is going to have werewolves in it.

  12. I liked it... I had to switched my brain off but I liked it. It's an example of pure entertainment :) Cheesy lines, loved the really cool baseball scene, lots of eye candy.. personally, I thought Kristen Stewart played Bella quite intelligently.. it's the best that anyone can do with the script and storyline.
