My relationship with Knowledge Book store in Bras Basah, that's what it is!!!
I've always been an avid hunter of old books, mostly for nostalgic value, but targetting primarily out-of-print titles. Been restricting myself since I got a family and not enough space at home, but occassionally, a rare chance would come by and I get to browse through the shops at Bras Basah looking for more nuggets.
After the nameless shop next to Evernew, Knowledge Books turned out to be the next greatest treasure trove (particularly since the former is almost tapped out).
But man, oh, man, their lack of organisation and double shelving of books make the whole process so time consuming, which tantalises, entices, but mostly guarantees to take up ten times as much time as I could spare to search through meticulously. And being good practicing Muslims, they close on Friday lunchtime for weekly prayers.
And they've been opening extensions after extension units on the same floor.
Yes, I did notice some attempt to group the target age groups together, and even marked off sections for Archies and Hardy Boys, but who cares? Those books aren't in danger of becoming out of print, and they're less than a dime a dozen.
Biggles, Race Against Time, Three Investigators, now these are the rare ones.
I love the store for their products, yet hate them for making it is so difficult to locate particular titles.
If I am still single, I could well volunteer my services to sort those books out for them, in all 6 units or so of their outlets.
It's a very gratifying and rewarding process, probably ranks right up there with sex and chocolates ... okay, maybe a little lower.
Man ... I hate them, yet I love them ...
Wow, never knew Knowledge Books had those gems. Race Against Time! Must check out KB one of these days. I must have mistook them for a Christian bookstore, which is probably why I have only been there once.
ReplyDeleteSorting books ranks up there with sex and chocolates??? *pengz*
ReplyDeletehahahah.....I've been there twice. I agreed you need to spent at least half an hour looking only on one section, too tiring.
ReplyDeleteThey really should have organised but I think they're short-handed and they see no reason to key in old books.
In fact, organising books is a very tedious job, at least my own experience tells me. But I do make an effort to categorise my collections of books mostly Chinese books. Initially I plan to key into the computer but then it takes time to key in Chinese text so I decided to do it write it down instead.
I guess it's just up to individuals whether they want a good and organised book collection.
do tell me, if i am to take the mrt, which is the nearest station to get there quickest? the cityhall or raffles place? SBS 7 goes there? or SBS 156?
ReplyDeleteexcuse moi, i have not been there on my own for many many many years...
Wait! u just advertised for KB..
ReplyDeleteNearest MRT is City Hall. Walking distance.
ReplyDeleteGreat thanks.! ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's either Bugis or City Hall
ReplyDeleteInfo only relevant to bibliophiles like me ... ;)
ReplyDeleteThey did have a couple of shelf or so marked as Christian books, maybe that's why you were misled.
ReplyDeleteIn anycase here is yet another happy excuse to go to Bras Basah. You did mention Race Against Time didn't you?
ReplyDeleteBut even the salesman does not know the books in the shelves? Nothing is saved in a computer? Fortunately, it is not a shoe shop...:D
ReplyDeleteLiu, it's kind of like the used-book sellers at flea-markets one would find in, e.g., Montmarte, Paris. The store has been expanding but the business method remains the same.
ReplyDeleteI sorted my own collection recently and found my copy of "Search for Mad Jack's Crown" from Race Against Time missing. :(
I've created wikipedia entries for the series, and is now only missing that title, and the last book, "Danger: Due North", which I'm not sure was ever sold in Singapore.
My own 3I collection is only short of "Deadly Double" and the last book too, "Cranky Collector".
oh I see! If you cannot find these books, I can have a look for you in France if you wish, but I would need more information like the name of the author of the book.
