This was one of the first HK wuxia TV serials dubbed into Mandarin for broadcast in Singapore, after a ban was imposed on use of Chinese dialects on TV.
I used to stay up late trying to watch it. To a small kid like me back then, the show rocks!!!
Unlike previous serials as such 陆小凤, this one used a lot of vibrant colours and has many outdoor scenes rather than scenes taken in studio sets.
It also pioneered outlandish hairstyles and outfits for the villains, most notably 風雷雨電, a cool, imaginative and novel concept back then, but taken to the extremes subsequently by other wuxia serials/movies, becoming jaded, repetitive and just an eyesore.
But because the main actor Norman Chu (徐少強) was apparently too much of a prima donna and unprofessional in his attendance during the shooting, his role was substituted halfway by Gu Guanzhong (顧冠忠), and the scriptwriters came up with an explanation that the rare and powerful skill he mastered transformed his physical appearance.
Norman reportedly regretted his conduct, but he was given another chance to reprise his role for the Shaw Brothers' movie versions of the same title in Mandarin 天蠶變 (The Bastard Swordsman in English) and its sequel, Return of the Bastard Swordsman (布衣神相).
I missed this drama very much. It's a good story but somehow perhaps it was not destined to be completed.

I only kept a few sets one of them is < 射雕英雄传> 黄日华和翁美玲主演.
The cantonese is always the best. When it translated to Mandarin, it lost a lot meanings and it actually became quite meaningless to watch it in Mandarin.
You do know that 徐少強 eventually reprised the role in the television sequel to this seiries (in the early 90s if I am not mistaken)? Quite forgettable I think, I can't remember. 再与天比高 Its only saving grace was using the original theme song.
ReplyDeleteThere was another sequel made in the late 80s I believe called 天龙绝 (not sure of the last character) which did not star 徐少強. I recall it being better.
Then there are the abominable sequels made by Taiwan with the imaginative title of 天蚕再变 or other. The least said about them, the better.
What I remember most from this series was the incestuous love between the leads. What better plot than have your true love be your sister?
On the contrary, for those serials with faithful reproduction of the dialogues in Jinyong novels, I find it works just as well if not better.

ReplyDeleteI don't watch Taiwanese TV dramas ---too long winded and most of them cannot really fight, they are just a batch of beautiful actors and actresses only.
I always have our lifestyle is quite close to Hong Kong rather than Taiwan. We are used to that fast pace.
Now I choose to watch China historical dramas, they are slow but they try to follow the historical events as close as possible.
Cantonese language have a kind of humor that Mandarin can never have. Mandarin, the language itself is quite serious so especially when you translated the comedy, it cannot replaced a lot of words so in the end it actually became very boring.
ReplyDeleteI've friends who don't know how to listen to Cantonese so sometimes I relate to them the stories , it makes so much different actually. They have no choice but to stick to the Mandarin.
In fact, I learned a lot of Cantonese terms while watching Hong Kong TV dramas since young and they normally used an indirect way to scold people, it's very insulting sometimes but then you get to learn a lot of things as well.
Like Stephen Chow movie, it's more fun and interesting to watch the Cantonese version than the Chinese version--a lot of meanings was lost after translation.
Since Singapore restricted dialects on the media, I choose to watch the HK movies or TV dramas on vcd or dvd rather than on TV and movie.
Can stilll watch SCV channel 48.. now it is showing 男亲女爱 in cantonese.. hilarious!

ReplyDeleteAnother distinction of 天蚕变 is it's also one me the earliest made-for-TV original stories rather than adaptation from a novel by Jin Yong, Gu Long etc.

ReplyDeleteOne was Taiwanese, the lead resembled Gu Guanzhong, if not Gu himself. It's usually referred to 《天蚕再变》 to distinguish it from the other sequels.
Another was 《天蚕变之天龙决》or simply 《天龙决》, starring Alex Man (万梓良) as a treacherous Emperor Zhengde (正德), and 余安安 reprising her role as 傅香君, and IIRC Nora Miao 苗可秀 as 独孤凤.

Looking at its cast though, it seemed to have been done in the early 1980s, but only shown in Singapore much later in the 1990s. Didn't recognise her then, but there was a younger Nancy Sit (薛家燕) as a "young girl". And also the cutie 文雪兒. 梁小龍 was also there, thus it also dated the serial as this favourite actor of mine was blacklisted later.
1993 《天蚕变之再与天比高》was the one reprising Norman Chu.
I remember liking 天龙决， was glued to the TV watching just about every episode. Some very nice gals there. ;-) I remember it having a tragic ending.

ReplyDeleteNope. All sequels have some forms of retconning and none true to the first storyline.
ReplyDeleteI suspect they brought back Norman 'cos over the years, he made his way back to "one of the good guys" cast list. If I'm not mistaken, it began with his role as Yang Zongbao in the Justice Bao-Yang family generals crossover 1990s TV series.
They did say that it was the result of his learning the special skill, that his features changed, so that is why they were able to put in the new guy.
