When the plumber works ...

So what am I to do at home while the plumbers are installing new exposed pipes to bypass the enclosed pipes, the latter believed to be leaking, and thus to avoid messy and lengthy works?

Other than monitor my office email and checking the forums, I mean ...

Well, anyone can tell you that making konnyaku jellies in the kitchen, or any kitchen project for that matter, while the water mains are turned off, is foolhardy.

Which is exactly what yours truly went to do. Some engineering "can do" brainwashing from college still lingers.

No water from the tap, isn't that exciting? Challenging?

On the positive side, I had made konnyaku jellies before, and I can leave the washing until later when the mains are turned back on.

On the negative side, I am trying to make it without using water. Of course I would need water, but what I have trying unsuccessfuly two times running is to make it using pure juice. The reason of course, is I am trying to avoid added sugar as much as possible.

And of all times, the can-opener chooses to malfunction. Perhaps I should get a new one. I do need fruit cocktails in my jelly, seems imcomplete without them.

The main reason for failing the previous attempts was because I put in the powder and they kept clumping together.

I had attributed the cause to the liquid being too hot, so this time, I decided to put it in right from the start after starting the fire.

No dice, some clumping still occurs.

Maybe, just maybe, I should google for some konnyaku recipes using juice instead of water instead of learning as I go.

Perhaps the juice I got from the supermarket (which says pure juice) still got too much sugar.

Anyway, the babies are all in the fridge now, and I will taste them this evening.

I ended up finishing the last batch myself, since Snowylass tasted it and said "Bleaaah!!"

Wonder what's it will be this time.

  2. It's okay when I was using only water. But most powders require addition of sugar, refined fine sugar ... juice got natural sugars.

  3. Yeah, I am trying to cut down on my sugar intake as well. Not always easy when you are out.

  4. gosh! i was shocked for a moment...
hmm my sis-in-law is good in making these jellos.. maybe i should ask her how to avoid clumps.. but fruit juice is a great idea to replace water.. natural fresh fruit juice is even better.

  7. So far, Snowylass liked it. The jellies turned out to be the most dense and hard I've made so far, leading me to suspect the sugar content of the juice to be too high.

The challenge is now to get Snowylady to taste it. She's not a jelly person.
And I'm in the dog house now for something I said frivolously but upset her - she was telling me something seriously then. I am such a goon.
